Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Gynecomastia, a condition of enlarged breasts in men, is common in men of any age. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia may cause men to feel embarrassed or uncomfortable when their chest is exposed. A male breast reduction may be help to improve self-confidence and self-image.  

The Procedure
When gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, a breast reduction is performed by liposuction alone. When there is glandular breast tissue or excess skin that must be removed to correct gynecomastia, excision techniques are used.

The Recovery
A male breast reduction is performed on an outpatient basis. Pain medication may be prescribed to relieve any mild pain or discomfort after surgery. Drains may be left in for several days to release any excess fluid. Swelling and bruising is common for the first few weeks, but subsides thereafter. Normal daily activities may be resumed by most individuals by the third week.
