Dr. Damian Shin Named Interim Chair of DNET

Damian Shin, PhD, associate professor in the Departments of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics (DNET) and Neurology, has been appointed interim chair of DNET.

An electrophysiologist, Dr. Shin came to Albany Med in 2009, after earning his PhD from the University of Toronto and completing a post-doctoral fellowship at Toronto Western Hospital in Toronto, Ontario.

His research focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy to help advance the development of new, effective therapeutics for these diseases.

Dr. Shin noted that one of his priorities for the department is to ensure the continued success of DNET’s faculty, staff and students in their research and education endeavors.

He also has a particular interest in promoting DNET – and neuroscience in general – in the larger community through programs such as the NextGen Neuroscience Virtual Summer Program and the annual Albany Regional Brain Bee competition.

“We are so proud of the incredible strides we’ve made recently to reach area high school students and encourage the inclusion of underrepresented communities in our field,” he said. “I’m looking forward to expanding on those efforts and further elevating the awareness of neuroscience within the region.”
