Nurses at Albany Med Play Ball to Help Kids Enjoy Their ‘Best Day Ever’

ALBANY, N.Y., July, 22, 2014 – It was more than just a day of softball for some Albany Medical Center nurses this past weekend. It was a way to help provide some happiness for children with cancer and their families.

A dozen nurses from the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center played in the Maddies’s Mark Foundation softball fundraiser at Nott Road Field in Guilderland on Saturday, July 19.

Maddie’s Mark Foundation was established in early 2012 in memory of Madeline “Maddie” Musto, a five-year-old Rotterdam native who lost her battle with a rare brain stem tumor in February of 2012. The Foundation funds and orchestrates fun events, trips or experiences called “best days ever” for kids suffering from major illnesses. It also supports children’s recreational and educational programs.

Albany Med’s PICU nurses have fielded a team every year since the tournament began. This year, two of the 20 teams in the tournament included Albany Med staff.

“To know we’re playing a game that in some way will support kids we care for every day really makes this our best day ever,” said Kara Dyer, RN, PICU clinical nurse specialist at Albany Med and softball team co-captain along with pediatric stat nurse Cliff Estaris, RN. “Kids and families battling terrible diseases need a chance to smile. The Foundation, through events like this softball tournament, provides lots of smiles.”

This year’s tournament raised more than $4,500 and has generated nearly $11,000 since it started in 2012.
