Albany Med Provides Patrol Bikes to Neighborhood Police Officers

ALBANY, N.Y., June 27, 2014 — As part of an ongoing partnership to enhance security in the Park South neighborhood, Albany Medical Center recently provided new patrol bikes to the Albany Police Department (APD) to enable greater police presence near the Albany Med campus.

For close to 20 years, Albany Med has provided a variety of resources to the police, including office space on campus and computers that allow them to connect with command. The current beat officers work from an office inside Albany Medical Center’s Surgeons Pavilion.

“Albany Med has acted as a catalyst to improve neighborhood vitality by working directly with the beat officers, neighborhood members and organizations to enhance the overall quality of life in the Park South neighborhood,” said Albany Chief of Police Steven Krokoff.

Albany Med’s Director of Security John Herritage called the relationship with the APD “outstanding.”

“These officers play an important role in ensuring the safety of our patients, visitors, employees, students and neighbors,” Herritage said.  “They are here to patrol not just Albany Medical Center, but the whole neighborhood.  If we need them, though, they’re here at a moment’s notice, and that is very important.”

Chief Krokoff said the bikes are important “because they remove the physical and psychological barriers often associated with officers in police cars. They foster a more personal interaction between community members and police officers, which helps enhance trust and reduce the fear of crime in Albany neighborhoods.”

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 734-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region’s largest physicians practice with more than 400 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region’s health and quality of life. For more information: www.amc.edu or www.facebook.com/albanymedicalcenter.
