Three Clinical Psychologists Join Staff

ALBANY, N.Y., January 22, 2013—Three clinical psychologists have joined Albany Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry. They will see adult, adolescent and pediatric patients on an outpatient and inpatient basis.

Mark Richard Lukowitsky, Ph.D., has been named assistant professor of psychology and assistant director of Albany Medical Center’s outpatient psychiatry clinic. He earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from Pennsylvania State University and completed both an internship and a post-doctoral fellowship at Albany Medical College. He sees adults and provides marital/couples therapy. His special interests are individual and group therapy for depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems and trauma. He also will be conducting scientific research on substance abuse and mental disorders.

Jennifer A. Durham-Fowler, Ph.D., has been appointed staff psychologist and assistant professor of psychology. She earned a doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. She completed fellowships at Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, MA, and at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Wellesley, MA, and an internship at The Danielsen Institute at Boston University. Her special interests are eating disorders, depression, trauma and psychotherapy. Dr. Durham-Fowler will also be conducting pre-surgical evaluations of patients preparing for bariatric and pain management procedures at Albany Medical Center.

Christopher J. Hamilton, Ph.D., has been appointed staff psychologist and assistant professor of psychology. He earned a doctorate in counseling psychology from Boston College and completed an internship and fellowship at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Hamilton primarily sees adolescents and adults and specializes in the treatment of sexual and gender identity issues. He also has a strong interest in eating disorders, psychological trauma, and mood disorders. In addition to conducting evaluations for bariatric surgery candidates, he is participating, along with Dr. Lukowitsky, in a program teaching Albany Med residents and medical students to identify patients whose use of alcohol and other substances puts them at risk for medical problems.

“We are delighted to welcome these three outstanding professionals to the department and the Medical Center and to be able to offer their services to our patients and the community at large,” said Victoria Balkoski, M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry.

They join a staff of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers who provide a full range of mental health services. Services include diagnosis of and treatment for depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, co-occurring substance abuse and dependence, eating disorders, attention deficit disorders, and adjustment disorders among others.
