Orthopedic Specialist in Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors Joins Staff

ALBANY, N.Y., October 31, 2012ŚMatthew DiCaprio, M.D., the only surgeon specializing in orthopedic oncology between Boston and New York City, has joined Albany Med to head the orthopedic oncology program and as an associate professor in the division of orthopedic surgery. He performs surgery at Albany Medical Center and sees patients at the Bone and Joint Center of the Capital Region Orthopaedic Group.

Dr. DiCaprio most recently was in private practice in Schenectady.

A fellowship-trained musculoskeletal oncologist, Dr. DiCaprio treats adults and children with malignant and benign bone and soft tissue tumors, including rare cancers such as sarcomas, as well as metastatic bone disease, such as bone tumors resulting from the spread of breast and lung cancer. He authors a sarcoma newsletter to keep his patients abreast of the latest developments in sarcoma care and treatment.

He performs innovative surgery for malignant tumors individualized to each patient and employs limb-salvage operations when appropriate to avoid amputation. These techniques in limb-salvage include structural allograft reconstruction and mega prosthetic reconstruction.

Dr. DiCaprio also performs general orthopaedic surgeries including those for joint replacement and trauma.

Dr. DiCaprio completed his fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at the University of Florida School Of Medicine in Gainesville. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Yale University School of Medicine, and earned his medical degree, graduating as the valedictorian, at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse.

A native of Scotia, he resides in Guilderland with his wife and three children.

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 651-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region’s largest physicians practice with 350 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region’s health and quality of life. For more information: www.amc.edu or www.facebook.com/albanymedicalcenter.
