Neonatologist and Researcher Dr. James Cummings Joins Staff

ALBANY, N.Y., August 31, 2012 James J. Cummings, M.D., FAAP, has joined Albany Medical Center as a professor of pediatrics, attending physician in neonatology, and vice chair of faculty development.

Dr. Cummings most recently served as section head of neonatology for University Heath Systems of East Carolina, where he was instrumental in building that hospital’s Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). He also established a fellowship training program at East Carolina University to train resident physicians to become neonatologists and developed a research program that received more than a dozen research grants, including several awards from the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Dr. Cummings previously served as medical director and assistant chief of neonatology at the Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. He completed his residency in pediatrics at State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

Board certified in neonatal-perinatal medicine, Dr. Cummings has authored more than a hundred articles, abstracts and book chapters on neonatal and pediatric topics as well as presented as an invited lecturer at numerous medical conferences and workshops.

In addition to his work on the neonatology unit at Albany Med, Dr. Cummings also will serve as vice chair of faculty development. He will work with pediatric faculty to develop their individual and collective skills in research, teaching, grant writing, and other areas, helping to focus and advance the academic mission of the department and the medical center.

He was fellowship trained in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and served as a research fellow at the University of California at San Francisco’s Cardiovascular Research Center.
