New Medical Students Receive White Coats in Traditional Ceremony

ALBANY, N.Y., August 6, 2013 — The 143 medical students entering Albany Medical College donned their white coats for the first time today during the college’s “White Coat Ceremony.” As part of the time-honored tradition that marks the students’ entry into medical school, the students also recited the Hippocratic Oath.

Drawn from nearly 9,000 applicants, this year’s students come from 27 states, including 43 students from New York. This year’s class ranges in age from 20 to 35.

Thirty-eight of the new students graduated from one of Albany Medical College’s joint degree programs at Siena College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College. Thirty-nine are entering with master’s degrees, and while the majority holds undergraduate degrees in biology, some majors include anthropology, art and music.

“Today’s ceremony serves as a reminder of the professionalism, humanism and compassionate care our new students pledge to deliver to their patients,” said Henry Pohl, M.D., vice dean for academic administration at Albany Medical College. “We are thrilled to welcome the next generation of physicians to the Albany Medical College community.”

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 651-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region’s largest physicians practice with nearly 400 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region’s health and quality of life. For more information: www.amc.edu or www.facebook.com/albanymedicalcenter.
