Albany Med Honored for Commitment to LGBT Patients
ALBANY, N.Y., July 15, 2013 — Albany Medical Center has been recognized for its commitment to equality for its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients, according to a report released this month by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization.
Albany Med was named a “Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality”, indicating that a facility meets four recognized criteria for equitable LGBT care and is complying with best practices and legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements for LGBT non-discrimination.
“This recognition confirms Albany Med’s commitment to treating all of our patients with the dignity and respect they deserve,” said Steven M. Frisch, M.D., Executive Vice President of Albany Medical Center. “We proudly provide quality care to a diverse Capital Region.”
The report details the results of the most recent Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), an annual survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
“The country’s healthcare facilities are leading figures in our nation’s movement toward full equality and inclusion for LGBT Americans,” HRC President Chad Griffin said. “No one should have to worry about receiving discriminatory healthcare.”
The report indicates that an increasing number of hospitals are committing to equality for its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients. An unprecedented 74 percent of 718 HEI 2013 survey respondents, including Albany Med, won recognition as “Leaders in LGBT Healthcare Equality” after meeting four foundational criteria for equitable LGBT care.
The HEI 2013 participants were congratulated for their explicit commitment to non-discrimination by Leon Rodriguez, Director of the Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
