Brave Will Foundation Gift to Support Palliative Care for Children
ALBANY, N.Y., July 11, 2012 – The Brave Will Foundation today presented a check for $25,000 to benefit the Journeys program at Albany Medical Center. The palliative care program focuses on providing the best quality of life possible for infants and children experiencing a life-threatening or terminal illness.
Brave Will founders Matt and Tammy Hladun, whose infant son Will passed away in 2009 from a rare form of cancer, made the presentation as part of an ice cream social in Albany Med’s Ronald McDonald House atrium. The gift comes during a special week; Will’s birthday is July 14th.
The Brave Will Foundation is one of the founding sponsors of the Journeys program. Journeys, part of the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders, runs under the direction of Joanne Porter, M.D. and is staffed by a team of professionals including nurses, pharmacists, pastoral ministers, child life specialists, counselors and social workers.
“Palliative care is about optimizing the quality of life, especially in cases where we know the quantity is limited,” said Felicia Hunter, a pediatric social worker at Albany Med. “The Hladun’s understanding of that is evidenced by their own experience and we are grateful for the incredible time and energy they put into supporting programs like Journeys.”
The Brave Will Foundation holds numerous fundraising events each year including a gala, golf tournament and family fun day.
