Stroke Program Receives 2012 Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award

ALBANY, N.Y., June 12, 2012 —Albany Medical Center has been chosen once again to receive the American Heart Association/Stroke Association’s highest distinction possible—the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

“Albany Medical Center continues as a leader in the national effort to prevent death and disability among stroke patients,” said Gary L. Bernardini, M.D., Ph.D., professor and director of stroke and neurocritical care, departments of neurology and neurosurgery, and Edith M. Hellman and Hellman Family Chair in Stroke Medicine at Albany Medical Center. “This award recognizes our ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for stroke patients throughout our region by ensuring they have access to the most advanced stroke treatments, therapies and education.”

To receive the award, Albany Medical Center achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke quality achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of ten Get With The Guidelines-Stroke quality measures. These include aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, deep vein thrombosis prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation education, all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.

In addition to earning the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, Albany Medical Center is the only hospital in the region, and one of only 13 statewide, to be certified by both the New York State Department of Health as a Stroke Center and by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center with the organization’s Gold Seal of Approval as an accredited institution with an advanced certification in stroke care.

As the Capital Region’s leader in stroke care, Albany Med provides stroke patients with 24/7 access to the most advanced procedures outside the standard three-hour treatment window by offering specialized clot retrieval and the expertise to deliver concentrated “clot busting” drugs directly to the affected brain area.

Moreover, Albany Medical Center’s preeminence in stroke care and multidisciplinary team of neurologists, neuro-radiologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, nurse practitioners, rehabilitation specialists, and neurology and neurosurgery residents makes the hospital a resource for other hospitals in a 25-county area that transfer patients to Albany Med for advanced treatment.
In an effort to further improve stroke care, Albany Medical Center works closely with Saratoga Hospital to provide consultation on stroke patients in real time, streamlining the process of identifying patients in need of Albany Med’s advanced capabilities and hastening their treatment upon arrival.

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York’s only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 651-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region’s largest physicians practice with 325 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region’s health and quality of life. For more information: or
