Albany Medical College Announces 2013 Commencement Ceremonies
ALBANY, N.Y., April 25, 2013 — Albany Medical College commencement ceremonies will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
The college expects to award more than 200 degrees at the ceremony, including medical degrees, Master of Science degrees in Physician Assistant Studies, Nurse Anesthesiology and Bioethics, and Master of Science and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Science.
This year’s keynote speaker, Bruce Beutler, M.D., is a Nobel laureate credited with developing groundbreaking methods to block the immune system’s inflammatory reaction. Specifically, Dr. Beutler created recombinant inhibitors of Tumor Necrosis Factors (TNF), now widely used as Enbrel, a first-line treatment for people with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders.
Dr. Beutler, Regental Professor and director of the Center for Genetics of Host Defense at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, received the 2009 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research.
Also addressing the graduates will be Wayne Diesel, chairman of the Albany Medical Center board of directors, and Vincent Verdile, M.D., Class of 1984, Albany Medical College dean and executive vice president for health affairs at Albany Medical Center, as well as student representatives of the Class of 2013.
