American Heart Association Honors Albany Med with Awards for Quality Care
Albany, N.Y., May 5, 2014 – Albany Medical Center has become one of two New York State hospitals to be recognized to date by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for its success in providing quality resuscitation care for both adult and pediatric patients who suffer cardiac arrests in the hospital.
Albany Med was awarded a Gold Quality Achievement Award for Resuscitation for meeting specific measures in treating adult cardiac arrest patients, and a Silver Achievement Award for Resuscitation in treating newborn patients. Previously, the American Heart Association /American Stroke Association recognized Albany Med for excellence in heart failure and stroke care.
“We are committed to providing the highest standard of care to our patients,” said Edward Philbin, M.D., Albany Med’s chief of Cardiology. “It’s a team effort that involves skilled and dedicated individuals from all disciplines working together from the initial emergency response to post-emergency care.”
Hospitals are honored through the heart and stroke associations’ Get With The Guidelines®-Resuscitation program, which focuses on promoting consistent adherence to the latest scientific treatment guidelines, often referred to as “evidence-based” medicine. The program aims to help hospital teams save more lives threatened by cardiopulmonary emergencies by consistently following the most up-to-date guidelines for treating patients who suffer a cardiac arrest in the hospital. Guidelines include following protocols for patient safety, medical emergency team response, effective and timely resuscitation (CPR) and post-emergency care.
More than 200,000 adults and children have an in-hospital cardiac arrest each year, according to the American Heart Association.
Under the Get With The Guidelines® program, Gold awards indicate that hospitals have followed treatment guidelines in certain key measures at least 85 percent of the time for 24 consecutive months. Silver awards are given to hospitals that have maintained certain performance levels at least 85 percent of the time for 12 consecutive months.
