Noted Health Care Leader to Deliver Keynote Address at Commencement

ALBANY, N.Y., April 20, 2012óGary Gottlieb, M.D., a 1979 graduate of Albany Medical College and president and chief executive officer of Partners HealthCare, the largest health care provider in Massachusetts, will deliver the keynote address at Albany Medical College’s 174th commencement at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 24 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

As CEO of Partners HealthCare, an integrated health system founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in 1994, Dr. Gottlieb oversees one of the nation’s leading biomedical research organizations and a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Recognized for his efforts to promote workforce development both at Partners and within the Boston community, Dr. Gottlieb serves as chairman of the Private Industry Council, Boston’s workforce development board. He also has served as co-chair of the (Boston) Mayor’s Task Force to Eliminate Health Disparities.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Gottlieb, who is also a national leader in geriatric psychiatry, established Penn Medical Center’s first program in geriatric psychiatry, a program upon which numerous others have been modeled. He is past president of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, and currently serves as professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

In addition to his degree from Albany Medical College, he received his bachelor’s degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in its six-year accelerated biomedical program. He holds an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Approximately 200 degrees are expected to be awarded at the ceremony, including medical degrees, Master of Science degrees in physician assistant studies, nurse anesthesiology and bioethics, and Master of Science and doctoral degrees (Ph.D.) in biomedical science.

Also addressing the graduates will be Wayne Diesel, chairman of the Albany Medical Center board of directors, and Vincent Verdile, M.D., dean of the Medical College and executive vice president for health affairs at the Medical Center.

Albany Medical College, founded in 1839 as one of the nation’s first private medical schools, trains medical students and provides continuing medical education programs for area physicians.
