Albany Med Helps in Efforts Revitalizing Capital Region

Albany Medical Center has been front and center in helping invigorate the region’s economy by bringing new businesses and jobs to Tech Valley.

Last year Albany Med President  Jim Barba assumed the co-chairmanship of the Capital Region Economic Development Council along with Robert Jones, PhD, president of the University at Albany. They were both appointed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to lead the innovative initiative in the greater Capital Region. The Governor also created similar councils across the state, making all 10 regions eligible
for millions of dollars in state economic development funds.

When Barba and Jones were tapped to lead the group, which includes regional leaders and elected officials, they set about engaging more people and more good thinking in the process. And it paid off.

As a result, our region advanced 370 economic development projects, more than any other region in the state, and late last year the Governor announced that the Capital Region was a “Top Performer” in line for $82.3 million earmarked for economic development.

Before Barba was council co-chair, Albany Med successfully competed for funds in support of the Park South project, and in this round a proposal by developers of the residential component of Park South also secured funding.
