More Choices for Getting Healthier


Albany Med employees, who focus on delivering the best health care possible, will now have more support than ever to help improve their own health through better eating, exercise and health maintenance.

Over the coming months, Albany Med’s Worksite Health Planning Group (WHPG) and Aramark, the vendor operating Choices Café, will be rolling out several ingredients of a coordinated and comprehensive approach to help employees get and stay healthy.
“Albany Med employees in every part of the institution are constantly striving to take care of others, and sometimes forget to take care of themselves,” said Cathy Halakan, senior vice president for Human Resources. “Our goal is to provide multiple ways for all of our employees to feel as healthy as possible, both at home and in the workplace.”
The Aramark program “Healthy for Life” incorporates more low-sodium food products, special events including National Nutrition Month in March, and healthy living information on topics including diet and hypertension. Aramark also will highlight healthy food choices with samples and recipes and will work in conjunction with Albany Med’s WHPG on employee outreach, as demonstrated by the joint effort to promote the “Go Red for Women” initiative in February with heart-healthy menu choices and education.

“The programs through Aramark and the Worksite Health Planning Group have tremendous potential to help us address obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure among our employees,” said Roslyn Jefferson, Employee Assistance Program coordinator. “We are looking forward to having more employees participate in workplace programs and use what they learn at work and home.”

As part of the offerings, healthy living tips will be posted on the “Wellness Wall” in Choices to provide maximum visibility. Health fairs, cooking demos and even a fitness app are on the way.

“We are trying to tie it all together,” said Shannon Carinci, Choices manager for Aramark. “The four pillars of the program are enable, educate, encourage and engage.”
