Multiple Sclerosis

Conditions & Treatments

A detailed evaluation by a neurologist with special training in multiple sclerosis is provided to all new patients in order to confirm a diagnosis. Other conditions that are diagnosed and treated by our team include:

  • All forms of multiple sclerosis
  • Neuromyelitis optica
  • Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
  • Optic neuritis
  • Transverse myelitis

Although there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, there are many treatment options which can decrease the number, severity and duration of episodes. The Comprehensive Care Program welcomes cases of all kinds, ranging from the most general to the most complex. Our approach is to diagnose by having a thorough knowledge of a patient's clinical history and past neurological imaging. We can then establish the best possible treatment.

We offer a treatment options for both the chronic and acute symptoms of multiple sclerosis.  The staff at our certified infusion center is specialty trained to administer the most advanced intravenous treatments in a welcoming and comfortable environment. For acute flair-ups, we offer steroid therapy and provide chemotherapy agents when indicated.

In an effort to promote advancements in finding a cause and cure for multiple sclerosis, we also facilitate patient involvement in clinical trial programs when applicable.

Dr. James Wymer, associate professor of neurology at Albany Medical Center, discusses the focus of the MS and ALS programs at Albany Med.
