Albany Medical Center's pediatric endocrinology specialists provide care to children and adolescents with endocrine disorders and diabetes mellitus.

What makes Albany Med’s program so unique is that we are the referral center for the New York State Congenital Hypothyroidism and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia Newborn Screening programs. In addition, our division head, Linda Riddick, MD, is the director of this program and principal investigator involved in clinical research studies evaluating growth and growth disorders. Congenital hypothyroidism occurs when a newborn does not make enough thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone is essential for normal brain development and body growth. Early treatment of congenital hypothyroidism prevents mental retardation.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a disorder that affects the hormones produced by the adrenal glands. If the diagnosis is not made early newborns with this condition can become ill and die. Early diagnosis and treatment are lifesaving. Newborns that test positive on newborn screening are diagnosed and treated in our division. These children are treated and growth and development are followed from birth to adulthood by our physicians.
