Dr. Charles Bakhos

Thoracic Surgery

Dr. Charles Bakhos completed his residency training in cardiothoracic surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston (Harvard Medical School), and his training in general surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, CT, an affiliate of Yale Medical School. He completed his internship in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.  He received his medical degree from Saint-Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. Dr. Bakhos also holds a master’s degree in cardiovascular pharmacology from Université Claude Bernard in Lyon, France.

Dr. Bakhos is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and board eligible in cardiothoracic surgery. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and is fluent in English, French and Arabic.

Dr. Todd Beyer

Endocrine & Breast Surgery

Dr. Todd Beyer is the only fellowship trained endocrine surgeon in the region, ensuring unparalleled judgment in and out of the operating room. He performs an exceptionally high volume of thyroidectomies and applies the most advanced techniques to the successful treatment of thyroid cancer.

Dr. Beyer performs minimally invasive parathyroidectomies, which in some cases give patients better outcomes, faster recovery and less scarring. He is the only area endocrine surgeon who offers patients ultrasound (in-office) diagnostics and procedures. After general surgery training at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Dr. Beyer completed a fellowship in endocrine surgery at Rush University Medical Center and Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Matthew DiCaprio
Orthopaedic and Oncological Surgery

Dr. Matthew DiCaprio is the Director of Orthopaedic Oncology. His areas of interest include bone and soft tissue sarcomas, metastatic bone disease, benign bone and soft tissue masses, limb salvage and reconstructive surgery, and general orthopaedics.

After completing his Orthopaedic Residency at Yale University, Dr. DiCaprio completed an Orthopaedic Fellowship at the University of Florida.

Thomas Fabian, M.D., FCCP, is Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery within the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He specializes in thoracic surgery, specifically the surgical treatment of benign and malignant (cancerous) diseases of the chest, lungs, and esophagus. His expertise lies in his ability to treat cancer patients holistically, which requires careful attention not only to surgical treatments, but also non-surgical treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, emotional support for patients and their families, and long-term management.

Urological Surgery

For over 20 years, Dr. Hugh Fisher was the region's only fellowship trained physician in urologic oncology and today remains among a select few. Dr. Fisher's experience includes treating a large number of prostate, kidney, bladder, and testes cancer cases through advanced surgical techniques like minimally invasive and robotic surgery. The result is better outcomes for many patients. In fact, of the 1,200 radical prostatectomies he's performed to date, under 1% experienced severe incontinence - a figure that is comparable with other national Centers of Excellence.

Dr. Fisher prides himself on tailoring treatment plans for patients based on their unique clinical and personal needs. He and his surgical colleagues, Dr. Badar Mian and Dr. Ronald Kaufman, offer patients advanced treatment for all aspects of urologic oncology.

Dr. Muhammad Hena

Breast & GI Oncological Surgery

Dr. Muhammad Abu Hena has more than 22 years of experience in surgery and surgical oncology in the Capital Region. He has performed many breast, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and gastric surgeries and is widely regarded as one of the best surgical oncologists around. In fact, he is among a select few to be fellowship trained in surgical oncology.

After being in private practice for more than 22 years, Dr. Hena joined Albany Medical Center in 2008 as a faculty surgeon. With an average of 400 to 500 surgeries completed per year, he brings invaluable experience to Albany Med's surgical cancer care team.

Dr. Hilton Hosannah

Dr. Hilton Hosannah spent several years as a cardiothoracic surgery fellow. He completed training at Temple University Hospital and Hahnemann University Hospital, both in Philadelphia, before coming to Albany Medical Center to complete a third fellowship.

Colorectal Surgery

Dr. Edward Lee is widely regarded as one of the most experienced colorectal surgeons in the United States, performing over 300 colectomies per year (200 laparoscopically). This compares to 60 to 80 of such procedures performed by the average colorectal surgeon.

While Dr. Lee's experience is unmatched in the region, his surgical outcomes are significantly better than the national average. For example, Dr. Lee's anastomosis leakage rate stands at 1%, compared to the national average of 4-5%. Dr. Lee and his partner, Dr. Brian T. Valerian, offer patients a comprehensive range of surgical options to treat colon and rectal cancer.

Dr. Ankesh Nigam
Gastrointestinal Surgery

Dr. Ankesh Nigam has performed some of the most complicated cancer surgeries in the nation, including successfully removing a 25-pound tumor. Fellowship trained at Johns Hopkins, he has unique expertise in pancreatic and liver tumors and advanced training in gastrointestinal surgery.

Dr. Nigam and his colleagues are the only surgeons in the country to perform intra-operative guided ultrasound dissections, which optimize outcomes by increasing respectability and diminishing blood loss. They offer the most comprehensive approach to surgery, operating on large multi-vessel tumors "as a team" when necessary. Dr. Nigam is recognized for using tissue expanders in the abdomen to allow for full-dose abdominal radiation for sarcomas.

With more than 30 years of experience in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, Dr. Steven Parnes was the first physician in the Albany area to perform a cochlear transplant. His interests include otology, neurotology, dizziness, cochlear implants, sinus and nasal disease, head and neck cancer, and voice disorders.

Dr. Parnes and his team, including Dr. Lisa Galati and Dr. Allison Lupinetti, offer the most advanced approach to treating head and neck cancer in the region. Their years of experience and combination of expertise make them the choice ENT clinic for patients in the Capital Region.

Dr. Donna Pietrocola
Breast Surgery

Dr. Donna Pietrocola specializes in breast cancer care and surgical oncology. As a female breast surgeon, she is widely regarded as a physician who relates extremely well to women, understanding the difficulty of making health decisions that will have profound emotional consequences.

Dr. Pietrocola's experience sets her apart from other beast surgeons in the region. She began practicing in 1980 and her expertise has evolved to include patient care, medical education and innovative research. Dr. Pietrocola in an active participant in numerous research efforts in medical oncology, radiation oncology and basic science to develop new ways of detecting and diagnosing breast cancer.

As research shows a strong correlation between higher surgeon volume of breast cancer cases and better patient outcomes, Dr. Pietrocola is a seasoned surgeon who cares for more than 150 newly diagnosed cases of breast cancer each year.
