Kidney (Renal) & Pancreatic Transplant Services

Kidney/Pancreas Transplant ProgramWelcome
The Division of Renal and Pancreatic Transplant Services at Albany Med specializes in kidney and pancreas transplants to diabetic patients with renal failure.  The mission of our program is to provide excellent short and long-term results after renal transplantation and/or simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplantation.  Close cooperative efforts between surgical, anesthesiology, nephrology, endocrinology, and infectious disease specialists provide for excellent outcomes in recipients of organ transplants.

Experience
Established in 1969, the Transplant Program at Albany Medical Center has performed nearly 2,000 kidney transplants.  This nationally acclaimed transplant program has some of the best outcomes in the country.  The wait periods are among the shortest in the Northeast.

National Recognition
In 1999, Dr. Conti and his Renal Transplant Quality Improvement Team placed 1st in the health care category of the prestigious "Quality Cup Awards" sponsored by the Rochester Institute of Technology and USA Today.
The Albany Medical Center Advantage
David Conti, MD, Director of Albany Medical Center's Transplant Program, is a nationally-recognized transplant surgeon and Chairman of the New York State Transplant Council.  As a leading researcher in the field of transplant immunology, he has kept the program on the leading edge of innovative drug studies.  The results have helped transform the nation's post-transplant experience from its early days of high rejection and infection rates, to recent studies resulting in steroid-free immunosuppressive regimens with a low incidence of rejection and infection.

Albany Medical Center's multidisciplinary approach to the care of transplant recipients is a close cooperative effort among surgical, anesthesiology, nephrology, endocrinology, infectious disease and social work specialists.  This provides for excellent outcomes in
recipients of organ transplants.  In addition, there is a dedicated 13-bed transplant unit providing focused expertise.

Daniel and sister, Martha
Daniel donated a kidney to his sister in 1975. Thirty + years later, Martha is still dialysis-free.

Patient Care
From the moment you contact the Transplant Program, you will feel a difference.  That difference is experience, at every level.  Dr. Conti has been performing transplants for over 20 years and has been with the Albany Medical Center Transplant Program since 1989.  Michael Gallichio, MD, attended Albany Medical College, practiced for several years at one of the nation's busiest transplant programs, and chose to join the Albany Medical Center Transplant Program in 2005.  Our Transplant Program Manager has been with the program for 28 years.   The pre-transplant coordinator is a 17-year veteran and our 2 post-transplant coordinators combine 35 years of experience.

The average staff member has been with the program 10 years.  Caring, continuity and experience define our staff.

Living Donation
More than 500 family members and friends have donated a kidney to a loved one at Albany Medical Center in the past 30 years.

91.86% - Expected kidney transplant graft survival for one year, based on national experience.

97.63% - Albany Medical Center kidney transplant graft survival for one year.

As reported by the Scientific Registry of Transplant recipients, January 2007
There are significant advantages for patients receiving live-donor kidneys, including:
