Breast Lift

Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is for women who have lost volume in their breasts or whose breasts have stretched and sagged due to loss of skin elasticity resulting from pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or heredity. A breast lift raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the breast contour.

The Procedure
Breast lift surgery takes several hours and can be achieved through a variety of incision techniques. Your Albany Medical Center plastic surgeon will determine the  appropriate technique that’s right for you.  After incisions are made, the underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve breast shape and firmness. The nipple and areola are repositioned to a more natural height. If necessary, enlarged areolas are reduced and any excess skin is removed. A breast lift may occur in conjunction with breast implants to increase firmness and size.

Three common incision techniques include:

Breast Lift, BeforeBreast Lift, After

Around the areola.

Breast Lift, BeforeBreast Lift, After

Around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease.

Breast Lift, BeforeBreast Lift, After

Around the areola and vertically down from the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease.

The Recovery
After breast lift surgery, patients will most likely experience discomfort. It can be relieved with prescribed pain medication. Following surgery, patients are required to wear elastic bandages or a surgical bra for the first few days. In one to two weeks, stitches are removed. Patients should stay out of work for at least a week. Physical activity and lifting should not be done for about a month.
