ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat)

Esteemed Care Close to Home

Otolaryngology, also known as ENT, is the diagnosis and treatment conditions of the ears, nose, throat, head, and neck. We treat conditions from the simple to the most complex—from allergies, acid reflux, sinusitis, and sleep apnea to head and neck tumors and advanced hearing rehabilitation and cochlear implantation.

Pituitary and Minimally Invasive Cranial Base Surgery Program

Albany Medical Center

Our ENT surgeons work closely with our neurosurgeons to perform cranial base surgeries. Our fellowship trained surgeons work with radiation and medical oncologists to diagnose and treat patients who require pituitary and minimally invasive cranial base surgery. The advanced endoscopic endonasal techniques used to treat skull base tumors provide a faster recovery time and a shorter hospital stay compared to traditional surgery.

Endoscopic endonasal surgery includes the use of very small telescopes that are guided through the nose. Through this method, our surgeons are able to resect tumors within the nasal cavity, skull base, and brain. This approach prevents large facial scars, craniotomy, and brain retraction. Damage to normal tissue around the tumor is significantly reduced allowing for a faster recovery time.

Conditions we treat:

Cochlear implantation surgery has been performed at Albany Medical Center since the first development of these devices in the mid 1990's. Clinical trials of new devices and techniques are ongoing and we can offer the latest technology available.

We are a multidisciplinary program that takes advantage of the varied resources across the health system. This includes the expertise of our surgeons who have a combined experience of thousands of implants, expert programming through our in house audiologists, speech and language therapy with our SLP pathologists, intraoperative CT imaging, genetic screening and counseling, pediatric care and counseling, and social services involvement when necessary.

Types of implants available include:

  • Traditional cochlear implants (Cochlear, Med-El, Advanced Bionics)
  • Hybrid cochlear implantation with possible hearing preservation
  • BAHA osseointegrated implants
  • Vibrant Med-El middle ear hearing implant
  • Traditional middle ear placement
  • Round window placement

Sudden single-sided deafness – an abrupt, often unexplained loss of hearing in one ear – can have a significant effect on quality of life.

Following approval by the FDA, otolaryngology specialists in the Albany Med Health System now use cochlear implants to treat patients with sudden single-sided deafness.

As a System, we derive our strength from collaboration and like-minded spirit for outstanding patient outcomes.”
