Pre-Op Instructions
The day before your scheduled admission, you will receive a call between noon-1:30pm from Albany Med’s Pre-Operative Care Unit to confirm the time of your surgery/procedure. At this time, you also will be provided with instructions on what time you should arrive at the Hospital, where to park and any dietary restrictions your physician has placed prior to arrival.
For your convenience, please do not come to the Hospital until a member of the Pre-Operative Care Unit has confirmed your admission. If for any reason you do not receive a phone call during this time, please call the Pre-Operative Care Unit directly at 518-262-4200 to inquire.


What to Bring
While we will provide you with nearly everything you will need during your stay, it may be helpful to bring the following items with you:

  • Insurance cards and information
  • A list of the medications you are taking and the dosages (please do not bring the actual medications with you)
  • A small amount of cash for newspapers, magazines and other small items you may wish to purchase
  • If staying overnight, you may want to bring slippers, a bathrobe, pajamas, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, cosmetics, etc.), games and books— the little items from home that may help make your stay more pleasant


What to Leave Behind
Albany Medical Center aims to provide a safe environment during your stay. Our Security Services department is on duty 24 hours within the hospital and provides courtesy services upon request. While we are committed to ensuring a safe environment, we are not responsible for your personal belongings. As such, we urge you not bring large amounts of cash or items of value including:

  • Checks and credit cards
  • Jewelry and other valuables
  • Medications
  • Personal papers not related to your hospitalization


Where to Park
Albany Medical Center offers convenient access to our hospital. From covered parking garages and free valet parking for patients to step-by-step directions to a particular service, we want to be sure that your experience with us is the best it can be, right from the start.

Parking is free for our patients, and valet services are available at our Physicians Pavilion and Emergency Department entrances for added convenience. Easy to follow parking and campus maps are included in the back of this packet to help you and your loved ones find your way throughout the Medical Center. More


Documenting your Wishes
Prior to your stay, it is important to document your wishes. Advance Directives (sometimes called “Living Wills”) allow you to express your desire to receive or refuse certain kinds of medical care under particular circumstances. By completing and signing this document, you can help make sure that your rights and wishes are respected whether or not you can express them.

Keep in mind that you can always change your Advance Directives. Simply submit a new form and request the previous form be voided. For guidance on completing these forms or to obtain a new one, you can contact one of the following departments:
