Specimen Collection: For pediatrics, nasopharyngeal washings are specimens of choice. Collection containers and PBS available from Lab at 262-3511. For adults, nasopharyngeal swabs in viral transport are specimens of choice. Throat swab in viral transport only if NP swab collected. Tracheal aspirates, BAL, etc. are acceptable. 
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL 
Handling Instructions for Offsite Areas: NP swab in viral transport. Place on wet ice or refrigerate. Transport to the laboratory ASAP. 
Reference Values: Negative for Influenza A, Influenza B and RSV RNA, positive Influenza A samples referred to subtyping.
