November 21, 2005 - Albany , NY

Albany, N.Y., November 21, 2005--Henry Pohl, M.D., vice dean for academic administration, recently was named the inaugural recipient of the Julio A. Sosa, M.D., Chair of Medical Education at Albany Medical College. The honor was bestowed at an event held at the Fort Orange Club Friday, Nov. 18. As the Sosa Endowed Chair, Dr. Pohl will also serve as director of the Sosa Academy of Medical Sciences--an innovative educational enterprise designed to promote the art of training medical students and new faculty (who will be paired with senior faculty mentors) by rewarding participating staff with stipends, awards and other resource initiatives. The Academy is named for long-time faculty member and founder of Albany Med's cardiac catheterization lab, Dr. Julio Sosa. "The Academy was named after Dr. Sosa because of his curiosity and passion for medicine, and his compassion and sensitivity for patients," says Vincent Verdile, M.D., executive vice president for health affairs and Dean of the Albany Medical College, who trained under Dr. Sosa as a student in the 1980s. "It is befitting that Dr. Pohl be installed as the inaugural Julio A. Sosa, M.D., Chair of Medical Education, for he has embodied the same dedication and compassion throughout his many years of service as both a physician and educator." The chair was created by a $1.5 million lead gift from philanthropist Phillip Morse, the founder of Namic, USA of Glens Falls, who collaborated for many years with Dr. Sosa to advance the field of catheterization. To date, $2.7 million has been donated by friends and alumni in support of the Sosa Academy endowment fund. The funds raised will endow a professorship to support faculty who promote the ideals of Dr. Sosa, as well as a research fund to allow the College to appoint and support a clinical scientist and academic leader dedicated to research in medical education, and scholarship funds to provide financial support for deserving students. The Albany Medical Center consists of one of the state's largest teaching hospitals, the Albany Medical Center Hospital, and one of the nation's oldest medical schools, the Albany Medical College.
