ALBANY, N.Y., August 5, 2014 - The 141 medical students entering Albany Medical College donned their white coats for the first time today during the college's "White Coat Ceremony." As part of the time-honored tradition that marks the students' entry into medical school, the students also recited the Hippocratic Oath.

Drawn from more than 9,000 applicants, this year's students come from 21 states, including 58 students from New York. This year's class ranges in age from 20 to 33.

Thirty-three of the new students graduated from one of Albany Medical College's joint degree programs at Siena College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College. Thirty-eight are entering with master's degrees, one is entering with a doctorate, and while the majority holds undergraduate degrees in biology, some other majors include anthropology, art history and criminology.

"This talented and diverse class of scholars will one day become distinguished practitioners in the field of medicine, perhaps even in our community," said Donald Pritchett, director of admissions at Albany Medical College. "We look forward to helping them fulfill their dreams of becoming physicians."

Albany Medical Center, northeastern New York's only academic health sciences center, is one of the largest private employers in the Capital Region. It incorporates the 651-bed Albany Medical Center Hospital, which offers the widest range of medical and surgical services in the region, and the Albany Medical College, which trains the next generation of doctors, scientists and other healthcare professionals, and also includes a biomedical research enterprise and the region's largest physicians practice with more than 400 doctors. Albany Medical Center works with dozens of community partners to improve the region's health and quality of life. For more information: or
