Albany Med Recognized for Organ Donation Awareness Efforts

March 7, 2014 - Albany , NY

ALBANY, N.Y.,  March 7, 2014 - Albany Medical Center was among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for reaching gold level of recognition for public education about donation and state donor registries.

Albany Med worked with the Center for Donation and Transplant to conduct awareness and registry campaigns to educate staff, patients, visitors, and community members about the critical need for organ, eye, and tissue donors and, by doing so, increased the number of potential donors on the state's donor registry.

The hospital earned points for each activity planned between September 2012 and May 2013 and was awarded gold level recognition through the Workplace Partnership for Life Hospital Campaign, a program launched in 2011 by HHS's Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Of the 924 hospitals and transplant centers participating in the campaign, 322 were recognized.

This campaign is a special effort of HRSA's Workplace Partnership for Life to mobilize the nation's hospitals to increase the number of people in the country who are registered organ, eye, and tissue donors.  To date, the Workplace Partnership for Life has registered a total of 221,834 donors nationally, Albany Medical Center helped register over 300 of those to the NYS organ donor registry.

Currently, there are over 119,000 people waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in the United States. An average of 17 people die every day due to lack of organs available for transplantation.
The Center for Donation & Transplant (CDT) is the federally designated non-profit health care organization that coordinates the organ and tissue donation process at more than 43 hospitals throughout northeastern New York and western Vermont.  CDT also coordinates community education about donation and transplant across its service area.  CDT is an accredited member of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations and a member in good standing with the United Network for Organ Sharing.  For more information, visit
