ALBANY, N.Y., Jan. 5, 2010-Well-known area cardiothoracic surgeon Harry J. DePan, M.D., has joined the Department of Surgery at Albany Medical Center, where he will continue his practice of cardiac surgery. He also has been named associate professor of surgery at Albany Medical College. Dr. DePan comes to Albany Med from Schenectady Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Albany Cardiothoracic Surgeons PC. He was director of Cardiac Surgery at Ellis Hospital for the past 14 years.

Dr. DePan, who has practiced in the Capital Region since 1989, previously worked as an attending surgeon at NYU Medical Center, Bellevue Medical Center Hospital, Manhattan Veterans Hospital and New York Infirmary/Beekman Downtown Hospital, all in New York City. He was also an assistant professor at NYU Medical School. Dr. DePan has been named to the "Best Doctors in America" list each year since 2006.

Dr. DePan, a native of Hartford, CT, who grew up in Glens Falls, is a 1978 graduate of Albany Medical College. He performed residencies in surgery and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at New York University Bellevue Medical Center.

Dr. DePan joins the highly regarded cardiac and surgical teams at Albany Medical Center, which was recently named as one the top 100 U.S. hospitals for cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters, a national health research firm. In addition to treating the full range of cardiothoracic conditions, Dr. DePan specializes in minimally invasive valve surgery and complex coronary revascularization. He also has special training in surgical ablation for atrial fibrillation and microwave ablation.

Dr. DePan and his wife, Ellen Taylor, have three children and live in Niskayuna.
