Albany Med Expansion: Background

Major hospital expansion underway

Learn more about the "nuts and bolts" of the project and how it will affect our region.

Background

Patient Pavilion

Until 2013, you will see a number of expansion projects underway at Albany Med. The centerpiece of our expansion effort is a $360 million Patient Pavilion.  Expansion by numbers

The largest hospital expansion project ever undertaken in northeastern New York, the 325,000 square foot Patient Pavilion will expand the hospital’s number of beds from 631 to 714 and will include new operating and recovery rooms, as well as cutting-edge intensive care units for both infants and adults. The building will be connected to the current hospital and to a new 1,500-car parking garage and office building. These new patient care areas and expanded capacity will help cement our position as the leading provider of quality health care in northeastern New York.

Albany Medical Center has also partnered with the City of Albany, Columbia Development and BBL Construction Services in the revitalization of the northwestern end of New Scotland Avenue. As a result, the Patient Pavilion will be surrounded by four other new office buildings constructed in the past few years by private developers that include office, educational and medical space for Albany Med, and administrative offices for the Albany Stratton VA Hospital, as well as retail space for several businesses and banks that have moved into the area.
These projects blend the practical needs of the community with the business
needs of Albany Med.
