First-Year Student Awards
Daggett Prizes in the Anatomies
This prize is awarded pursuant to the provisions of a bequest by the late Dr. Nathan G. Daggett of Schenectady, an alumnus of the Class of 1867. The Daggett Prize is awarded annually to two sophomore students for their best overall performance in the anatomies.
Arthur Knudson Prize in Biochemistry
A fund has been established which provides an annual prize in honor and memory of the late Professor Arthur Knudson who was a devoted and dedicated member of the Faculty of Albany Medical College for 41 years and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from 1926-1955. This prize is awarded to the sophomore student demonstrating the greatest proficiency in biochemistry.
General Excellence in Human Biochemistry
This prize, established by the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is awarded to a sophomore student for excellence in basic human biochemistry.
Elmer Schacht Prize in Microbiology
This prize is given by Former Trustee Elmer Schacht to a sophomore student demonstrating the greatest proficiency in microbiology.
Henry Schaffer Prize in Pathology
This prize is given to the sophomore student demonstrating the greatest proficiency in pathology.
Richard 0. Shapiro Prize
This prize, endowed by family and friends in memory of the late Richard O. Shapiro, a member of the Class of 1979, is awarded to the first-year student who has, in the opinion of his or her classmates, made the most meaningful
contribution to the well-being of the class.
Townsend Prize in Physiology
This prize, endowed by the late Professor Franklin Townsend, Jr., MD, is awarded to the sophomore student obtaining the best examination score in physiology at the end of the first session of study in this subject.
Academic Excellence in Physiology
This prize, established by the Department of Physiology, is awarded to a sophomore student for excellence in basic medical physiology during freshman year.

Dean's Certificates for Outstanding Research Endeavors
Presented to the students who have carried out the most commendable research projects during the preceding summer.

Second-Year Student Awards
American Society of Clinical Pathologists' Award for Academic Excellence and Achievement
This award, created by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, is presented to a second-year student who has demonstrated general academic excellence in pathology.
Trustees' Prize in Pharmacology
The Trustees' Prize is presented to a junior student who has demonstrated the greatest proficiency in basic pharmacology.
The McGraw-Hill Awards
Established by the Health Professions Division of the McGraw-Hill Company, these awards are presented to the top two first-year students who through their dedication and hard work represent the health care providers of the future.
Second- or Third-Year Student Awards
Jack Spitalny Memorial Fellowship
This fellowship was established in 1978 by Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Saxe of Albany on the twenty-first birthday of their son, Joshua E. Saxe. It commemorates the dedication, skill and devotion of their friend and physician, Dr. Jack M. Spitalny. Competitive in nature, the scholarship is awarded to a second- or third-year medical student to underwrite the cost of special study or research to be conducted during the third or fourth year of study toward their MD degree.
Third-Year Student Awards
Richard T. Beebe, MD Fellowship in Medicine
This fellowship, endowed by the friends of Dr. Beebe, is administered through the Department of Medicine. It is awarded to an outstanding student at the completion of the third year in order to make it possible for this student to study, during an elective period, in a laboratory of international distinction in an area of chosen interest.
Fourth-Year Student Awards
Academic Achievement Award of the Medical Society of the County of Albany and its Auxiliary
Initiated in 1988, this award is given annually to the fourth-year student having the highest academic average according to cumulative ranking at the end of the third year and who has maintained a legal residence in Albany County for a minimum of eight years.
Ralph D. Alley Prize
This prize, endowed by the Division of Cardiothoracic surgery, is awarded to the senior student whose clinical acumen, attention to detail and enthusiastic acquisition of skills and knowledge in thoracic surgery best exemplifies those principles which characterized the career of this outstanding thoracic surgeon.
The Kenneth M. Archibold Prize
This prize is awarded to the senior student, who through thoughtful care of patients and enthusiastic acquisition of skills and knowledge, best exemplifies those principles of obstetrical practice which prevailed throughout the career of Kenneth M. Archibold, MD, an outstanding physician.
C.R. Bard Urological Award
This prize is awarded to a student at Albany Medical College who has had the best performance while on clinical rotation in the Division of Urological Surgery.
Richard A. Barnett '81 Award
This award, endowed in 1987 by family and friends in memory of Richard A. Barnett, MD, Class of 1981, is given annually to the graduating senior student who embodies those characteristics considered to be ideal for the practice of general internal medicine.
The Dr. Richard J. Bernier Award in Psychiatry
The Dr. Richard J. Bernier Award in Psychiatry was established in memory of Dr. Richard J. Bernier, a member of the Class of 1984, to honor his life and his brief but substantial contributions to Psychiatry. The award is presented to a senior medical student who has chosen a career in Psychiatry, has special concern for chronically ill patients, respect for long-term psychotherapy and diverse personal interests.
John Milton Bigelow Prize
This prize, endowed by the late Dr. John M. Bigelow, is awarded to the senior student who has excelled in examinations relating to diseases of the ear, nose and throat.
Mary E. Carroll Award
This award is endowed by Miss Anna M. Sexton of Albany in memory of her beloved cousin, the late Miss Mary E. Carroll, who was associated with the Medical College and the Alumni Association for many years. This award is presented to a graduating female student of high academic standing who has selected residency training in family practice.
The James M. Bell, MD Award in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
This prize, sponsored by the New York Capital District Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, is awarded in honor of Dr. James M. Bell, a prominent child adolescent psychiatrist and professor at Albany medical College. This award is given to a senior medical student for outstanding performance and achievement during the senior elective in child and adolescent psychiatry.
Daggett Trust Prizes
These prizes, endowed by Dr. Nathan C. Daggett, a member of the Albany Medical College Class of 1867, are presented to the two senior students who have displayed the most effective professional performance and conduct.
Dean's Senior Research Award
This award was established to recognize outstanding research endeavors performed by Albany Medical College students while in medical school, which are beyond the required six-year BS/MD research projects and/or summer fellowships.
David J. Dickerman Alumni Prize
This prize was initiated in the Fall of 1969 by the family and friends of the late Dr. David J. Dickerman, a 1940 graduate of Albany Medical College. This prize is awarded to the senior student who has exhibited the best clinical performance in obstetrics and gynecology.
Halsted Award for Clinical Nutrition
This award, instituted by the Division of Clinical Nutrition, is given to the senior medical student who, during medical school, has demonstrated the greatest interest and excellence in nutrition clinical care or research.
Neil Hellman Prize
This prize, endowed in honor of the late Mr. Neil Hellman's 75th birthday by his grandchildren in 1983, is to be awarded annually to that member of the graduating class of the College, who, in the view of the doctors and nurses affiliated with the College, has demonstrated outstanding sensitivity and commitment to humanistic values in dealings with patients.
Martin A. Feldstein and Irma A. Feldstein Family Practice Scholarship Fund
This scholarship, awarded by the Department of Family Practice, is presented to three students who have a sincere commitment to Family Practice and a strong desire to work with the underserved. Applications are available from the Department of Family Practice.
Frederick H. Hesser Prize
This prize, endowed by friends and colleagues in memory of Dr. Frederick H. Hesser, former professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology, is awarded to the senior student who has excelled in clinical neurology.
J. Garth Johnson Prize
This prize, endowed in memory of Dr. J. Garth Johnson, former professor and chairman of the Department of Community Health, is awarded to the senior student judged to be outstanding in those characteristics considered ideal in a family physician.
Lamb Foundation, Inc. Prizes
These prizes are awarded to senior students who have shown the most sympathetic and kindly understanding in dealing with patients assigned to them and who have thereby most nearly approached the ideal in doctor/patient relationships.
W. Brandon Macomber Award
This award was initiated in 1987 by Dr. John Wheeler (Class of 1969), in recognition of the late Dr. Macomber's teaching excellence and professional accomplishments, and is given to the senior student who best exemplifies genuine sustained interest and potential in the field of plastic surgery.
Alden March Prize
This prize, named for the founder of Albany Medical College, is awarded to the senior student who has demonstrated the greatest proficiency and aptitude for surgery.
The David Doran Trager Award
Established in 1995, this award is presented to the senior student who has demonstrated overall excellence in surgery during the fourth year of study. This award was endowed by the family in memory of the late David Doran Trager, a member of the Class of 1968.
Frederick McCandless Prize
This prize is awarded to the senior student who has demonstrated the best performance in psychiatry.
Medical Student Excellence in Emergency Medicine
This award, sponsored by the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, is presented to the senior medical student with the most outstanding achievements in
Nathan and Lena Apanof Emergency Medicine Award
This award, honoring the memory of Nathan and Lena Apanof, was established in 1992 by their daughter, Susan A. Maxwell, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. It is presented to the senior medical student who has demonstrated the highest humanistic attributes in emergency medicine and possesses qualities which have allowed them to establish fine patient rapport while providing effective care in acute health crises.
Alexander W. McDonald Award in Anesthesiology
The faculty and staff of the Department of Anesthesiology have established this award in honor of Alexander W. McDonald, MD, Professor of Anesthesiology, a gifted teacher, anesthesiologist and person. The award is presented to the senior student who has demonstrated the potential to excel in the clinical and academic practice of anesthesiology.
The Frank Maxon, Jr., MD Medical Student Alumni Award
This award is presented as a symbol of recognition and of merit to the senior student of outstanding personal, academic and professional qualities and who has exhibited a strong and active interest in the projects and programs of the Alumni Association while a student at Albany Medical College. Additionally, involvement in extracurricular activities that have served to enhance student life and have contributed positively to the operation and administration of the Albany Medical College is of considerable importance. Dr. Frank C. Maxon, Jr. was the first recipient of this award when he graduated from Albany Medical College in 1939.
The Dr. James Derham Alumni Award
This award, initiated in 1994, is given to a graduating minority student who has matched in a primary care specialty. Academic achievement and clinical skill are considered in the selection process. Fluent in English, French and Spanish, Dr. Derham was licensed in the 1780s in Louisiana and was reportedly the first African-American to practice medicine in the United States.
The James and Rita Dougherty Alumni Award
Established in 1995, this award is presented to a graduating student who has matched in an appropriate field leading to orthopedic surgery and has demonstrated this intention while a student at Albany Medical College. The award is the result of an endowment gift from James Dougherty, MD, a member of the Class of 1951, and his wife, Rita Dougherty, as an expression of their respect and gratitude to Albany Medical College.
The Angelo Pappanikou Award
This award memorializes Angelo Pappanikou, a member of the Class of 1967. Family, colleagues and friends of Dr. Pappanikou established the endowment to fund this annual award. It is presented to a senior medical student who has demonstrated strong dedication and intensive effort as a medical student; participated openly and freely with classmates and obviously shared in promoting a sense of unity and togetherness as a class; demonstrated leadership and accepted responsibility in an exemplary manner; and by example motivated others and maintained a positive image as viewed by peers and mentors.
Pediatric Faculty Prize
This prize is awarded by the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics to the senior student with the greatest potential to become an outstanding pediatrician.
Kenneth B. Olson Prize
This prize, endowed by friends, associates and former students of Dr. Kenneth B. Olson is awarded to the senior student who has demonstrated the best potential for developing a career in clinical oncology.
Anna Perkins Scholarship
This scholarship is presented in appreciation of Dr. Anna Perkins' dedication, skill and devotion throughout her many years of practice devoted to family medicine. The award is presented to a student planning to pursue a career in family medicine.
The Alice E. Fruehan, MD Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is presented to a fourth year medical student who displays the characteristics most consistent with the ideal family physician. It is presented to a student who plans to begin residency training in the Albany area.
The Dr. Marianna Chan Memorial Award
This award, established by the 1994 Senior Class of Albany Medical College, is given in memory of the late Dr. Marianna Chan to a third or fourth year student who demonstrates a commitment to serving the Asian-American community and a dedication to the principles of family medicine. The award was created to perpetuate her memory by encouraging students who exemplify Dr. Chan's kind and caring spirit.
Robert D. Reinecke Prize for Research in Ophthalmology
This prize has been established by the faculty and staff of the Department of Ophthalmology in honor of Dr. Robert Reinecke, former professor and chairman of the department, for his contributions to medical education. It is awarded to a senior student and/or resident in ophthalmology on the basis of scientific research or academic excellence in ophthalmology.
John Faunce Roach Prize in Radiology
This prize, endowed in 1990 by the Department of Radiology, is awarded in honor of Dr. John Faunce Roach, former professor and chairman and currently professor emeritus of radiology. It is awarded to the senior medical student who has demonstrated the greatest interest and aptitude in the field of radiology.
The John Sampson Society Award
This award is given to a senior student pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology and who has exhibited outstanding achievement academically and clinically while on the obstetric and gynecologic service.
Jack Spitalny Prize
This prize, endowed in memory of Dr. Jack Spitalny by his family, is awarded to the senior student who has excelled in pediatrics.
The Dr. and Mrs. William J. "Tommy" Thompson (AMC '08) Annual Prize in Psychiatry
This award, endowed in 1990 by a grateful and admiring nephew in the memory of Dr. William J. Thompson, an alumnus of the Class of 1908, will be given to the senior student who, in the judgment of the Dean, has demonstrated special aptitude and proficiency in psychiatry.
S. Oakley Vander Poel Prize
This prize, endowed by the late Mrs. Vander Poel in memory of her husband, a professor at Albany Medical College from 1876 to 1886, is awarded to the senior
