Research Opportunities
Our clinical research division is very active and all second, third and fourth year residents are expected to participate in research. Research projects may develop as a result of pursuing in-depth studies on subjects in which the resident has a special interest, or may emerge during rotations in the various services. The training program is flexible enough to allow adequate time for investigating problems in both anatomic and clinical pathology. Collaboration with persons in other departments in the medical school is also encouraged.
Residents have access to a wide range of laboratory equipment, and many ongoing projects in the clinical research laboratory are open to resident involvement. The department provides technical support, research supplies and reagents, as well as materials and the support necessary to underwrite the studies and the presentations. In addition, most of the pathology attendings are involved in scholarly activities, and residents are encouraged to get involved these projects.
Our program has consistently been recognized by the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology as one of the top ten in the world in number of submissions to that society’s annual meeting. A large number of our residents attend this meeting each year, at departmental expense, and participate for the entire week in the research presentations, and educational conferences offered. The residents are encouraged to ultimately publish their research, and their resultant enhanced resumes make them even more attractive candidates for future employment. Our residents have consistently sought and obtained the finest fellowship positions in the country.
