Visiting Students

Please note that we are no longer accepting applications for the remaining 2008-2009 elective period.  We will begin accepting applications for the 2009-2010 elective period on March 15, 2009.  Any application received prior to March 15, 2009 will be returned.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Welcome!  As you embark on your final year of medical school, we hope that you will take this opportunity to consider Albany Medical College's fourth year elective program.  AMC invites students who are completing their final year and who are in good academic standing with their home school to participate in this competitive and reputable program.  Prospective students must also obtain their institution's approval which will enable them to pursue their desired elective at AMC.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must enclose the following documents to ensure a successful submission:

  • AMC's completed Elective Application Form 
  • Official copy of medical school transcripts
  • Letter of recommendation from the Dean, including student's academic standing
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof of malpractice/liability insurance
  • Completed pre-rotation pre-rotation health assessment forms assessment forms
    • Proof of a complete physical performed within six months prior to the onset of the rotation
    • Documentation (including lab reports) of positive titers against the following
      • Chicken Pox (Varicella)
      • Mumps
      • Rubella
      • Rubeola
  • Hepatitis B

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

 AMC welcomes international students and encourages them to apply for this elective program.  In addition to the above requirements, international students must also submit the following:

  • Certification from New York State Education Department before beginning the rotation.  Information regarding this process may be acquired by contacting Walter Ramos at (518) 474-3817 ext. 560 or by visiting http://www.op.nysed.gov/medforms.htm
  • Letter from home school attesting to the student's use of written and verbal English as sufficient means to communicate with medical faculty, patients and others.

 

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

AMC only accepts students from LCME accredited schools or international students who are enrolled in institutions that are recognized and approved by the New York State Board of Medicine (www.op.nysed.gov/medforms.htm).  While we may not always be able to accommodate students from other institutions, all applicants are given individual consideration and every effort is made to comply with each request.

 Each student may only take up to eight weeks of elective time during the academic year.  The desired elective dates that the visiting student selects must correspond with AMC's elective periods, which can be found here.

Lastly, room, board and meals are the responsibility of the visiting student and are not provided by AMC.
