Albany Medical College
To provide the breadth of clinical training required in modern medical education, a medical college must have available to its students a wide variety of clinical experiences. Albany Medical College provides extensive clinical experience through teaching affiliations with several nearby hospitals. In making such arrangements, it was recognized that the type of experience provided by a tertiary medical center hospital should be supplemented by the establishment of programs with neighboring primary and secondary care hospitals.
Albany Medical Center Hospital
Albany Medical Center Hospital was organized in 1849 by a group of public-spirited citizens, some of whom had been instrumental in the establishment of Albany Medical College. Albany Medical Center Hospital and Albany Medical College formally joined together, establishing the new Albany Medical Center, in 1982.
Albany Medical Center Hospital is one of the largest general hospitals in New York, with 619 beds and an annual admission of 23,000 patients. It is the principal clinical teaching unit, affording second-, third- and fourth-year students an abundant and varied clinical teaching experience, both in the inpatient services and in the practices of full-time and volunteer faculty. Chairs of clinical departments in the College hold analogous positions in the service departments of the Hospital.
Albany Medical Center Hospital is responsible for providing modern, sophisticated health care to an area encompassing 24 counties and more than 2 million people. The Hospital maintains service to graduate medical teaching programs in most specialties.
Samuel S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
The Samuel S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, erected in 1951, is located across the street from Albany Medical Center Hospital and Albany Medical College. This modern hospital of 401 beds is a major teaching hospital with a wide variety of sophisticated equipment and facilities. The staff is comprised of full-time physicians who have faculty appointments at Albany Medical College, who are selected and approved by a Dean's Committee of the Medical College, as well as clinical consulting and attending physicians drawn from the faculty of the Medical College. Second-, third- and fourth-year medical students receive part of their clinical instruction at this hospital. A close relationship is maintained between the Veterans facility and the Medical College through the Dean's Committee, which participates in the supervision of patient care and in the planning and supervision of the undergraduate and resident training programs.
Capital District Psychiatric Center
Albany Medical College has cooperative agreements with the Capital District Psychiatric Center (CDPC), a facility of the New York State Office of Mental Health, located adjacent to the College. The CDPC adds substantially to the teaching and research capabilities of the College in psychiatry and related fields. Many of the CDPC professional staff hold faculty appointments at Albany Medical College. The Psychiatric Center serves as the state psychiatric hospital for Albany and its eight surrounding counties. It provides a clinical setting for research and education in psychiatry. The association between the College and the New York State Department of Mental Health increases the opportunities for advances in the discovery of new knowledge, the education of physicians and the provision of effective treatment to the mentally ill.
St. Peter's Hospital
Third-year clerkships and senior electives in medicine, surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology are available at St. Peter's Hospital, located one and one-half miles west of Albany Medical College. In addition, the general medical services at St. Peter's are utilized for clinical training for second-year students in physical diagnosis. The 447 beds in this modern community hospital provide students with a broad clinical experience, closely supervised by both full- and part-time faculty from the College.
Ellis Hospital
Some students are assigned third- and/or fourth-year clerkships in medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology and psychiatry at Ellis Hospital, located in the neighboring community of Schenectady, New York. This community hospital with 352 beds is linked closely with both Albany Medical College and Albany Medical Center Hospital through affiliated graduate training programs. Both full- and part-time faculty members, based at Ellis Hospital, utilize the excellent resources available in providing a wide variety of fourth-year elective opportunities and in the supervision of more fundamental clinical training experiences for second- and third- year students.
