S.O. Vanderpoel, M.D. Class of 1849 Surgeon General, S.N.Y. 1859-1863
Serving as Surgeon General during the start of the War,Dr. Vanderpoel gave medical direction in the formation of all regiments sent from New York State. At the end of his term, he had over 600 surgeons in the field. Dr. Vanderpoel also volunteered as a surgeon during the first battle of the Wilderness.

J.V.P. Quackenbush, M.D. Class of 1842 Surgeon General, S.N.Y. 1863-1865
Dr. Quackenbush served as Surgeon General during most of the War. He spent his entire professional career in Albany, N.Y. and was a popular lecturer at the Medical College and Hospital.

S.D. Willard, M.D. Class of 1848 Surgeon General, S.N.Y. 1865
Dr. Sylvester D. Willard took over as Surgeon General in 1865 and died later that same year. He had previously seen considerable service at the front as a volunteer surgeon, especially in 1862, after the battles of the Peninsula, to look after New York soldiers.

J. Pomfret, M.D. Class of 1858 Surgeon General, S.N.Y. 1865-1869
Dr. James Pomfret was appointed Surgeon of the 113th Regiment;it was changed to the 7th Heavy Artillery, and till May, 1864, was placed in the defenses of Washington, during which time he acted as Brigade Surgeon. J.S. Mosher, M.D. Class of 1863 Surgeon General, S.N.Y. 1869-1873
Dr. Jacob S. Mosher served as a volunteer surgeon from his graduation in 1863 to the close of the War in the hospitals of the Army of the Potomac and at Washington. Click here to read Dr. Mosher's obituary.
