Collection
The Library's collection supports the education, research and patient care initiatives of the Albany Medical Center. As part of the Library's strategic plan, the Library provides dynamic, multi-format resources and knowledge-based information that supports and anticipates the educational, research, clinical and management needs of its customers. The Library houses over 150,000 volumes and more than 2,700 journal titles with a significant number of online subscriptions, including online databases, journals, books, and media programs.
Computer Resources
Located on the 1st floor, the Winifred M. Pitkin, MD and George P. Pitkin, MD Learning Laboratory opened its doors in September 2005 and was made possible by a generous contribution from Mr. George M. Pitkin in memory of his parents and in honor of his father's graduation from Albany Medical College in 1908. The 20 seat computer lab is open to Albany Medical College students and residents.
The 5th floor Independent Learning Center (ILC), dedicated to R. Foster Scott, M.D., houses 38 computers, 25 of which are located in the multimedia instruction lab. 5th floor study rooms are equipped with audio-visual equipment for viewing multi-media materials.
Eight computers in the first floor Reference area are available for faculty, staff, student, and public use.
Reference
A reference librarian is available to find answers to specific questions, provide assistance with searching the biomedical literature and offer guidance in using library resources. Reference service is available Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Requests are also accepted by e-mail at library@mail.amc.edu or by phone at 518-262-5532.
Education
Educational sessions and web-based tutorials are available to faculty, students, and staff. Sessions can be customized to meet your informational needs. Librarians will meet with you in the Library or in your office or work setting. Customized individual or group educational sessions or library tours are available upon request for AMC faculty, staff, and students. Patient and consumer health groups may also inquire about having a librarian develop tailored educational sessions for meetings by contacting 518-262-5532 or library@mail.amc.edu .
Circulation
The Circulation Desk, located at the main entrance to the Library, is the place to register for your library card. This is also the place to borrow and return material and access reserve items. There are several categories of customers, each with different library privileges. For more information call 518-262-5530.
Document Delivery Service
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
AMC faculty, staff, and students can obtain material not owned by the Library by requesting it online at http://cdlc-amc.sage.edu/illiad/logon.html or through the Intranet. On the "Academic" tab go to the Schaffer Library section. Then select "Interlibrary Loan." There is no fee for this service but registration is required. Requested articles usually arrive within 1 to 3 days; requested books usually arrive within 5 to 7 days.
Photocopying Service
Service is available to AMC faculty, staff, and students. Regular service charges are $5.00 per article - most requests are filled within 48 to 72 hours. Rush service charges are $10.00 per article and are filled within 24 hours. Special arrangements need to be made for more than five copy requests.
LoansomeDoc
The Library participates in the National Library of Medicine's Loansome Doc program. The Library provides fee-based document delivery service to individuals within the healthcare field without easy access to a health sciences library. Registration and deposit account are required. Technical Services
Technical Services is responsible for the acquisition, cataloging and processing of library materials, as well as serials management. In addition, bindery and thesis preparation take place here. The Library's online catalog provides access to the collection of books, journals, and multimedia. For more information call 518-262-5539.
History of Medicine Room
The Emerson C. Kelly History of Medicine Room contains rare and historical editions of medical texts. It also contains the catalogs of the Albany Medical College from 1838 to the present, the complete run of the Albany Medical Annals, and other historical artifacts from Albany Medical College. Material in the History of Medicine Room is available for use by appointment: 518-262-5197
Archives
The Archives contains historic primary documents from Albany Medical College, Albany Medical Center Hospital, Albany Medical Center and the Albany Medical Center School of Nursing. Non-academic records of Albany Medical College alumni and rosters of faculty members are included. Material in the archives is available for use by appointment: 518-262-5810.
