Plastic Surgery Residency

Program Prerequisites
Applicants for the Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency Training Model must have graduated from a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee in Graduate Medical Education (LCME). Applicants are processed through the National Residency Matching Program.

We no longer accept applications for the Independent Model.

Clinical Program
The Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency provides complete plastic surgery training in an Integrated Model leading to application for examination by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. One position is offered each year for the six (6) year training cycle. The first three years are spent in basic general surgical studies. Satisfactory completion of this training phase allows the resident to enter into the three-year plastic surgery training cycle.

The plastic surgery residents participate in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care. This includes, under normal circumstances, preoperative evaluation, surgical performance/assistance at surgery, and postoperative care. The plastic surgery residents are responsible for the focused evaluation and treatment of serious and critically ill or injured patients under close supervision of the attending faculty. The call schedule is taken in equal rotation by all residents.

Weekly plastic surgery clinics are staffed at Albany Medical Center (AMC) and Samuel S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC). In addition, a bi-monthly hand surgery clinic is held at VAMC in conjunction with the plastic surgery clinic and a craniofacial clinic meets at St. Peter's Hospital. Residents participate in daily morning attending teaching rounds, evening unit rounds, and teaching rounds at Albany Medical College. Monthly mortality and morbidity conferences and Divisional meetings are held at the South Clinical Campus of Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Personal evaluation and longitudinal follow-up is provided to residents through outpatient plastic surgical resident office hours. Patients assigned to each resident are evaluated, discussed with the attending staff, and then scheduled for surgery as appropriate. Postoperative wound care and long-term follow-up is provided in these clinics.

Teaching
Residents gain valuable teaching experience through participation in the training programs of the general surgery housestaff. Residents also assist in the training and supervision of medical students, student nurses, and physician assistants. Residents are expected to monitor and evaluate unit work and participate in didactic teaching.

Education
The principles of plastic surgery are emphasized throughout daily contact with the attending staff, in weekly training sessions, at mortality and morbidity conferences, and during interval "surgical procedure days" in the operating room. Anatomic dissections and demonstrations are provided on a monthly basis, based on the residents' work. All residents are required to spend time in the divisional microsurgical laboratory for their education and practice.

Throughout the program, plastic surgery residents are encouraged to pursue special interests in clinical and experimental topics related to plastic surgery. The senior resident attends the annual meeting of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. They also present their research at the Annual Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation Chief Resident's Conference. The junior plastic surgery resident attends the Basic Maxillofacial Workshop Course sponsored by the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Northeast Society of Plastic Surgery meeting.
