Family Medicine

Chief Resident

Mary Wojtyk, M.D.

As Chief Resident, I would like to introduce you to our Family Medicine Residency. Our program is a combination of both university and community-based experiences. We spend much of our first year learning inpatient medicine at Albany Medical Center Hospital and St. Peters Hospital while working closely with residents and attendings in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics and Obstetrics.

The residents are well received and treated as equal members of these teams. Much of our training continues at St. Peter's Hospital, a modern nearby community facility. St. Peter's, like AMC, is truly committed to teaching. We feel that our pediatric experience at St. Peter's Hospital makes the residency especially strong because the Family Medicine Residents exclusively manage all pediatric patients.

One of the strongest assets of our program is its flexibility. Dr. Mitnick, as well as the rest of the faculty, are very open to input from the residents on ways to improve the program or to fashion a more meaningful rotation. There is also a great deal of support for residents who wish to pursue special interests, especially during the four months of electives.

The Family Medicine Center is a wonderfully designed facility that features spacious resident work rooms and a well outfitted procedure room. Labs and phlebotomy are available on the premises as well. Each resident develops his or her own patient population for both acute medical visits and preventive care.

There is a wonderful sense of camaraderie at our program. The residents share close working and personal relationships with each other, the faculty and staff. The faculty is easy to talk to, and have a broad range of interests and talents. We have monthly get togethers for Journal Club, Residents' meetings, and support lunches.

The affiliation with Community Care Physicians, P.C. (CCP) makes our health center a private entity offering many advantages to our program. We as residents are exposed to a more typical private practice setting which gives us a great opportunity to learn the business of medicine. CCP has many groups of physicians affiliated with them in all specialties, offering us access to many community physicians for rotations, lectures and other learning experiences.

Albany is a city with a unique blend of big-city opportunities with a small-town feel. The nearby Catskill and Adirondack Mountains provide year-round recreation. Saratoga offers an active summer season at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Saratoga Race Track. In Albany we have the Times Union Arena which offers a variety of performances as well as hockey, basketball, soccer and arena football. There is affordable housing in the city as well as in the surrounding suburbs, excellent restaurants and award-winning schools.

Oh, one more thing. We have a truly reasonable call schedule.
