Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Shellie Asher, MD
Program Director,
Emergency Medicine

The Albany Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency has been in place, and ABEM/RRC-approved, since its inception in 1988.  We are a PGY 1-3 program with 12 resident physicians in each training year.

What makes Albany Medical Center's Emergency Medicine training program unique?

  • Experience - A long history of success in EM means a well-trod path for you as a resident physician.
  • Program and Department Leadership - Our department has leadership roles integrated extensively into all levels of the hospital and medical college.
  • A Dynamic Program - We remain committed to adapting our program as assets and resident needs evolve. This approach means a program that is flexible for your EM training.
  • Program Rotations/Focus - We believe that the best training asset in EM is our ED. We also believe critical care medicine is essential to EM training. As a consequence, our residents spend greater than 95% of their hospital-based training in the ED or Critical Care Units.
  • A Balanced Approach to Residency Training -  Our philosophy values a balance between career and life away from the hospital. Our resident work hours and schedules allow for development as an emergency physician as well as for one's life away from residency.
