The Department of Emergency Medicine offers four hours of educational conference time every Wednesday morning from 8am-noon, with occasional flex hours scheduled from noon-1pm. Numerous resources are provided for residents to earn an additional hour of asynchronous credit each week. An additional three hours of Simulation training outside of conference are scheduled each month. Two hours per month are devoted to Journal Club, which is often hosted by a faculty member at their home. Added attending coverage in the department ensures that all residents rotating in the Emergency Department can be excused from patient care to attend the entire conference day. Residents rotating on other services are also excused from clinical responsibilities to attend at least part of the conference day.
The core curriculum of Emergency Medicine, as defined by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, is covered in these conferences. The curriculum is organized around major topics, and is repeated every 18 months so that residents have the opportunity to hear and discuss all topics twice during their three-year residency.
Albany Medical Center faculty, as well as guest faculty from around the country, present lectures throughout the year. More than 75% of our educational sessions are faculty led. Conferences include a mixture of didactic presentations, interactive case-based conferences, small group learning, and skills-based workshops. Approximately 40% of conference activities are comprised of small group and hands-on sessions that emphasize the practical application of medical knowledge, such as advanced airway workshops, ECG interpretation, X-Ray interpretation and procedural task training using low- and high- fidelity simulation models.
Longitudinal conference series supplement the core lectures, including topics in Pediatrics, Toxicology and EMS. Some highlights of the longitudinal offerings include:
- SIMULATION: Residents work in teams to solve a variety of patient care scenarios involving communication, teamwork, and procedural skills in the Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center once a month.
- CADAVER LAB: Dedicated biweekly sessions for EM residents to practice emergent procedures such as cricothyroidotomy, lateral canthotomy, tube thoracostomies, and open thoracotomy on fresh tissue cadavers.
- TRAUMA CONFERENCE: A biweekly, multidisciplinary conference to present and discuss interesting trauma cases. Cases are presented and discussed by representatives from emergency medicine, surgery, surgical subspecialties, radiology and EMS.
- BOARD REVIEW: A monthly review of the core content tested in the American Board of Emergency Medicine certification examination in a "flipped classroom" format.
- CLINICAL VARIATIONS CONFERENCE: led by the Chief Resident for Academics, this biannual conference polls the faculty group on their diverse approaches to common clinical questions. Faculty responses are presented to provide residents with insight into the decision-making process of attending physicians, and to illustrate the variations in the way individual attending's practice EM.
- MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY: Case-based review of recent cases with actual or potential morbidity or mortality. Presented by senior residents during their administrative rotation without identification of patients or providers, this monthly conference emphasizes teaching and focuses on systems issues to improve care for future patients.
- SCHOLARLY TRACKS: Longitudinal curricula focused on non-clinical topics in Academics, Administration/Community, and Transition to Residency(for PGY 1s) to foster professional development and build career readiness over three years of training.
SPECIALTY TEACHING DAYS: faculty organize several interactive teaching days throughout the year, including Advanced Resuscitation, Toxicology, Wilderness Medicine, and Medical Malpractice.
The third year class is supported to go to a national conference, and the residency also attends periodic regional conferences. Support is available for residents to present research at conferences, and an educational stipend is provided to each resident for individual use.
