The Department of Emergency Medicine at Albany Medical Center is an extraordinary place to work and train.  The department is a very busy level one trauma and tertiary care center with a good mix of blunt and penetrating trauma, as well as acute surgical, medical, and pediatric cases.

The staff has always been and continues to be the best feature of the program.  The attending staff are dedicated to teaching.  They are attentive to patient care and education with a focus toward evidence based medicine, giving guidance while allowing residents to develop their own individual practice styles.

The first year of training is focused on the evaluation and management of undifferentiated and critically ill adult and pediatric patients in the Emergency Department.  Off service months in the SICU, MICU, and CCU allow for further development of these skills.  Obstetrics and Anesthesia rotations are focused directly toward training in intubation and delivery skills.  While residents see pediatric cases on a daily basis, one month is spent dedicated to the pediatric area of the Emergency Department and allows for a concentrated pediatric learning experience.  

The second year residents spend the majority of their time in the Emergency Department.  It is here that further trauma experience is gained, and procedural skills are perfected.  Residents increase in level of responsibility by taking on a teaching role in the clinical and didactic settings.  The pediatric experience is further built upon with one month spent in the PICU.

The third year of residency is a time to learn to manage a department as a whole, and efficiency is fine-tuned.  There are two months set aside for elective time allowing for further learning in a variety of areas such as toxicology, research, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and international medicine.

Living in Albany offers a mix of leisure activities.  Local outdoor activities abound, including hiking, biking, fishing, skiing, and climbing.  The City of Albany has excellent restaurants, shows, and other entertainment.  For a more metropolitan experience, we are ideally located with New York City, Boston, and Montreal a short train or car ride away.
