Psychiatry
Medical students are introduced to the neurobiologic and psychosocial evaluative methods for diagnosis and treatment of major psychiatric disorders, as well as techniques for effective clinical interviewing. Students are also instructed in recognizing common psychiatric conditions frequently presented to nonpsychiatrist physicians, such as somatizing conditions and suicidal behavior.
Second-year students complete two themes in psychiatry: Human Development and Psychobiology and Behavioral Biology. Third-year students gain experience in diagnosing and treating patients under close supervision by department faculty during a six week clerkship. A wide range of clinical electives is available to seniors.
