Neurology Overview

The Department of Neurology helps in the correlation of basic and clinical neuroscience through the nervous system teaching presented to first and second-year students.  Clinical seminars and lectures introduce students to the fundamental neurobiologic topics which have immediate clinical relevance. The students' knowledge and understanding of basic principles are expanded through lectures and bedside demonstrations conducted during the second year course. The second-year course relies heavily on small group teaching sessions.

Students in the clinical years participate in a required four-week rotation through the Adult, Pediatric, and Consultations Neurology Services at Albany Medical Center Hospital and the Samuel S. Stratton Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.  Clinical rotations provide students with an opportunity to assume limited responsibility for patient care under the close supervision of residents and the attending staff. Thorough and accurate neurological examinations, logical approach to diagnosis, discriminating and sophisticated use of ancillary diagnostic procedures and pragmatic approaches to treatment are emphasized.

In addition, students in their clinical years may elect to participate in experimental and clinical neuropathology, muscle physiopathology and clinical neurophysiology.
