Paul Burcher MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Bioethics and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Alden March Bioethics Institute at Albany Medical College. He is the director of the human reproduction theme in the medical school’s basic science curriculum. Albany Medical College, in conjunction with Alden March Bioethics Institute, has an innovative four-year curriculum for bioethics and humanities, and he directs and teaches the third and fourth year component, “Health, Care and Society”.  Alden March Bioethics Institute also has a graduate program in bioethics, and here he teaches “Healthcare Justice,” “Ethical Issues in Special Populations,” and “Philosophical Foundations of Bioethics.” 

His publications have been on the doctor-patient relationship, physician empathy, and more recently on ethical issues in clinical obstetrics. He is currently involved in a research project studying cesarean section regret, in an effort to develop strategies to reduce dissatisfaction and regret among women who need to undergo cesarean section during labor. He remains clinically active as a Generalist Ob/Gyn, and enjoys teaching both medical students and residents.
