At Albany Med, we are leading the way in treating patients with sarcoidosis and researching the causes of this debilitating disease.
Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect any part of the body, but most commonly affects the lungs, followed by the eyes, skin and lymph glands. In this condition, granulomas, microscopic balls of white blood cells, leave the bloodstream and coalesce together in an organ causing a variety of symptoms. The disease can be difficult to diagnose and its cause remains unknown.
This disease, once considered rare, is now a common chronic illness and is seen all over the world. Anyone, regardless of gender, age or ethnicity, can be diagnosed with sarcoidosis. However, a greater occurrence of the disease has been found in young black adults, especially females, as well as adults of Scandinavian, German, Irish or Puerto Rican descent.
Although much about sarcoidosis remains unknown, there are many treatment options available for people who have this disease. But, diagnosis of the disease is a critical first step to receiving the appropriate treatment and management. At Albany Med, we have medical expertise and resources available to help patients with sarcoidosis get on a path to recovery and lead a normal life.
