For patients with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, neuropathy and myopathy, the rehabilitation unit at Albany Med provides a safe and caring environment in which patients can recuperate after an exacerbation of multiple sclerosis or other neurological disease. It is the only rehabilitation unit in the region where patients can be seen by the physician who provided their initial care.
Albany Med’s rehabilitation team consists of physicians who are board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists and case managers who have extensive training and experience in the care of patients with problems of the central or peripheral nervous system.
The team works together to help the patient regain mobility and improve important functions, such as walking and speaking, as well as providing education on nutrition and self-care that is necessary to ensure the patient has a safe discharge. Communication between all members of the rehabilitation team, the patient, and the patient’s family occurs daily in the unit, and helps the patient to have an optimal recuperation period.
