Every minute counts when someone is having a stroke. At Albany Med, our stroke team is ready 24/7 to provide patients with the most advanced treatments available.
A stroke occurs when there’s a disturbance in the amount of blood delivered to part of the brain, resulting in injury to brain tissue. Most strokes are due to a blocked blood vessel, but rupture of a blood vessel can also cause a stroke. The severity of strokes can range from mild to life-threatening, but a stroke is always an emergency requiring rapid diagnosis and treatment. Every minute counts when someone is having a stroke. Immediately call 911 if someone displays symptoms of a stroke.
The high standards and outcomes of our stroke team have resulted in the highly sought after certification as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and being designated a Stroke Center by the New York State Department of Health, as well as prestigious honors and awards from the American Stroke and Heart Associations.
Albany Med provides consultation and works closely with other hospitals throughout upstate New York, western Massachusetts and Vermont to facilitate rapid transfer of patients to Albany Med for expert evaluation and treatment of stroke.
