GE Innova Bi-plane Angiography Suite
As the world of image-guided minimally-invasive surgery has expanded, so too has Albany Med’s capacity to care for people with stroke, vascular disease, aneurysms, and other complex neurological and vascular conditions. Albany Med's GE Innova Bi-plane Angiography Suite is the only one of its kind in the region.
The state-of-the-art suite includes a number of digital flat screens both inside and outside the operating area. The technology features rotational angiography and 3-D reconstruction, and is also capable of producing cross-sectional images like a CT-scan. With image guidance and “road mapping” technology, instead of more invasive, traditional “open” surgery, doctors can insert catheters into arteries and veins and guide delicate instruments through the catheters to the site of the problem, all the while, watching their way by viewing the live X-ray images.
Bi-plane angiography technology takes angiography a step further by providing images on two planes at the same time, which are seen on separate screens. This
allows physicians to have dramatically better visualization of arteries and vessels in 3-D. This can cut surgery time – in many cases by as much as half. This is beneficial to patients because the less time they have with catheters and other equipment inside them, the less likelihood there is of complications and recovery is faster. Also, patients are exposed to fewer injections of contrast dye, and, importantly, less radiation.
The new bi-plane suite is the first to use flat-panel technology which provides two significant benefits. First, image quality is improved so we can see with even more fine detail than before, while the second is a reduction in radiation dose by approximately 30 percent. With these advantages, there is an even further improvement in patient satisfaction and outcomes.
This is the second bi-plane suite at Albany Med; although it’s similar to the first, it contains even more advanced technology. The new suite is specifically designed to accommodate patients needing general anesthesia and is primarily dedicated to neuro-interventional procedures including the treatment of strokes, carotid and intracranial atherosclerosis with stents, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformation (cerebral AVMs) with coils and glue. In the region, these neuro-interventional procedures are only available at Albany Med.
