Epilepsy Fellowship

Preparing fellows to practice epilepsy and interpret epilepsy monitoring

Welcome to Albany Medical College

On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Neurology at Albany Medical Center, I would like to thank you for your interest in our epilepsy fellowship.

This is a one-year, ACGME-accredited epilepsy fellowship. The Epilepsy Program at Albany Medical Center is the only one in northeastern New York to offer expert and global management of this complex brain illness, and one of a few centers in New York to offer an incomparable degree of clinical competency. Albany Medical Center's adult comprehensive Epilepsy Program has been granted membership into the prestigious National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) and received a Level 4 designation by the NAEC, the highest it offers, and shared by the best academic centers in the country. A Level 4 rating from the NAEC indicates a center offers the most advanced medical and surgical diagnostic and treatment options for epilepsy.

The epicenter of the program is the inpatient epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU), which provides 12 fixed beds for continuous digital video and EEG monitoring. Six beds are located on the adult neurology floor and six beds on the pediatric floor. Additional monitoring equipment is available for other hospitalized patients, including those in the Neuro ICU. The EMU operates 24-hours-a-day and is staffed by dedicated epilepsy nurses and technologists. Each year, Albany Medical Center performs more than 2,000 electroencephalograms (EEG) and evaluates more than 400 patients in the EMU for improved medical care or surgical cure.

We offer:

  • A diverse clinical exposure
  • Close daily contact between fellows and faculty
  • A strong didactic component
  • Devoted faculty who enjoy mentoring and teaching

If you are seeking a fellowship with a faculty sincerely interested in the welfare and education of its trainees and a program that combines academic excellence with a supportive and collegial environment, then the Albany Medical Center epilepsy fellowship may be the program for you! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. I can be reached at [email protected].

  • Prepare fellows for critical EEG interpretation, usage and epilepsy monitoring.
  • Provide fellow training based on supervised clinical work of increasing responsibility with both inpatients and outpatients in association with a foundation of organized instruction in basic neurosciences and epilepsy.

Elanagan Nagarajan, MD quote
I really enjoyed working with the residents and attendings that I met throughout my time as a fellow here. The department is really growing and I felt that I would have good exposure to every aspect of epilepsy. Albany is also a nice-sized city with lots of things to do within the city and surrounding areas.”
