Nerve & Muscle Diseases - Myopathies

Myopathies refer to all diseases of muscle. All mypoathies cause weakness, sometimes along with other symptoms. There are numerous causes including genetic abnormalities, immune-system abnormalities, infections, toxins, vitamin deficiencies and endocrine abnormalities.

Depending on the specific type of myopathy, symptoms may be reversible, mild and stable, or progressive. The correct diagnosis requires a neurologist with specific expertise in these disorders.

Albany Med Advantage
Neurologists of the Neuroscience Institute have specific expertise in diagnosing and treating myopathies. They will perform comprehensive medical examinations and procedures to determine the type of myopathy a patient may have.

Treatments for myopathies depend on the disease and specific causes. Supportive and symptomatic treatment may be the only treatment available for some disorders. Treatment for other disorders may include drug therapy, physical therapy, bracing to support weakened muscles and surgery. Expert neurologists will determine the best treatment plan for each individual patient.
