Hypertension Program

Hypertension Program

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension has developed a comprehensive Hypertension Program. A hypertension consortium headed by Professor Edward Philbin (Chief of Cardiology) has been created that links the hypertension program to multiple specialties, including:

  • Cardiology
  • Endocrinology
  • General internal medicine
  • Emergency department
  • Pharmacology
  • Renal translational research program

The program offers hypertension management services by Dr. Roy Mathew. The hypertension program provides comprehensive hypertension care including pharmacologic therapy, dietary counseling and lifestyle modification for all and particularly those who are overweight and those with metabolic syndrome. The program has focused on:

  • Salt restriction
  • Smoking cessation
  • Alcohol moderation
  • Exercise
  • Fruits and vegetables

The program has a busy outpatient clinic that provides hypertension service to patients with all types of hypertension. The program also has on-site availability of echocardiogram services and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring program. The hypertension program works very closely with Professor Gary Siskin (Chairman: Radiology Department) who provides vital imaging support and adrenal vein sampling for secondary forms of hypertension.

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension has also initiated a national hypertension meeting with specific goals of increasing hypertension awareness, education and research at the local and national level. The program has participated and provided expertise in a hospital wide hypertension quality improvement initiative.

This initiative has had a huge impact on improving blood pressure control on a large scale with control rates exceeding 80% throughout the medical center, compared to the national average of around 55% control. A platform to initiate and promote research and scholarly activity in the field of hypertension has also been initiated. Research projects including biomarkers identification under the leadership of Roy Mathew/Darius Mason and renal denervation intervention under the leadership of Gary Siskin are underway.
